IET Local Networks are managed by groups of volunteers. Networks organise events to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in their local area and promote membership of the IET. All Network events are open to the public and most are free of charge.

The Solent Network includes the Isle of Wight and all of Hampshire south of a line drawn to the north of Alton and Winchester.
Almost all of the annual programme of events takes place between late September and the following June and always includes events in Havant, Newport, Portsmouth and Southampton as well as occasional events in Fareham and Winchester.
In addition to lectures and workshops the programme includes technical visits to various establishments in the area.
All events in the programme are open to both IET members and the general public and are free of charge, although occasionally organisations hosting technical visits to their premises specify that only IET members may be accommodated.
The activities in Hampshire are arranged by the main network committee and there is a separate committee responsible for the activities on the Isle of Wight. A programme of daytime events, mainly in the Portsmouth area, is arranged by an active retired members section.
There is a particular focus on events for young professionals (loosely defined as young engineers between their first year of tertiary education and the tenth year following completion of their studies). Events in this programme are frequently, but not exclusively, arranged in collaboration with the 'IET on Campus' student groups in the various educational establishments in the area.
Three groups of partners are the focus of work in the area:-
The Solent Network together with the Hampshire North and the Dorset & South Wiltshire local networks form the IET Southern Region. This arrangement not only enhances working together but also provides opportunities for working with the communities in the IET's Knowledge Network on major regional events.

The Solent Network Committee is concerned to try to reflect the interests of all members and is always glad to receive suggestions, constructive criticism and offers of help. Contact either the Secretary or the Events Committee Chairman, as appropriate.
